Trustmark’s 2016 Impact Educator Grant Program Helps Lake County Schools Promote Healthy Lifestyles for Children

09/14/2015
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Schools throughout Lake County are eligible to receive grants of up to $1,000 for innovative education programs that promote health and healthy decision-making. Trustmark, the Lake Forest-based health and life insurer, benefits administrator, and health and fitness management company urges educators in Lake County public and non-profit schools, elementary through high school, to apply now for a 2016 Impact Educator Grant of up to $1,000.

Impact Educator Grants are awarded to teachers for creating programs that encourage children to make healthy lifestyle decisions. Last year, Trustmark awarded 53 grants totaling nearly $48,000 to teachers in Lake County for developing innovative health-oriented curriculums, ranging from in-class nutritional cooking programs to after-school activities, and from outdoor running clubs to indoor yoga curriculums.

“Area teachers let us know that health-oriented programs are important to help students build a foundation for lifelong healthy habits from an early age,” said Kelly Marsh, Trustmark’s Impact Educator Grant Program Steering Committee Chair. “Unfortunately, funding for such programs isn’t always available to the schools. Through the Impact Educator Grant program, we support local Lake County schools to develop a variety of educational programs that will be the most impactful to their students.”

Lake County Teachers Can Apply Now

Trustmark invites teachers and principals who educate in public or not-for-profit elementary, middle or high schools in Lake County, Ill., to apply for an Impact Educator Grant. Teachers can use a quick online application to apply by visiting http://www.trustmarkins.com/internet/corporate/aboutus_Impact.html

All proposals must be received by October 23, 2015. Grants will be awarded in December 2015.

The following are samples of creative school programs funded last year through the Impact Educator Grant Program:

Eating Healthy on the Cheap
“This program was designed to develop healthy eating habits for teenagers living on a tight budget who are looking for ways to reduce food expenses while still enjoying tasty, nutritious meals. Students prepared healthy entrees from scratch, discussed the preparation skills and reasons why these dishes are both healthy and cheaper on the budget. They also experimented with healthy dessert options such as broiled fruit. This program helped students make correct choices in what they eat now so they build a healthy relationship with food in the long run.”

Bill Luedtke, Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher
Zion-Benton Township High School
Zion, Illinois

Spaulding School Running Club
“The club began last year in an effort to increase student academic achievement, cardiovascular fitness and to improve student behavior. Kindergarten, first- and second-grade students voluntarily participate in the running club during morning recess time. This year, they ran nearly 8,000 times, earned nearly 3,000 tokens and received 119 t-shirts. The program is a continuing success with 90 to 95 percent participation.”

Len Wojciechowicz, Physical Education Teacher
Spaulding Elementary School
Gurnee, Illinois

Enrich Me After-School Program
“This pilot program for students Kindergarten through 6th grade taught nutrition, fitness and social, intellectual and environmental wellness. Student activities included planting, growing and serving salad greens, making healthy snacks and creating their own recipe book to use at home, and taking part in indoor and outdoor fitness games and sports, such as team parachute play. We’re expecting the program to create a greater understanding of wellness and the long-term effects of making healthy choices.”
