LAKE FOREST, Ill. – What started as a one-desk office in downtown Chicago in 1913 has grown into a unique, nationwide employee benefits company. Today, Trustmark currently employs 4,200 full- and part-time associates nationwide and provides voluntary supplemental benefits, small group health insurance plans, onsite wellness and fitness programs, and benefits administration services for self-funded employers through more than 50 offices across the country.
“For 100 years, Trustmark Companies has helped people increase their well-being through better health and greater financial security,” said Joe Pray, Trustmark President and CEO. “It’s one thing for a company to survive 100 years. It’s quite another for an enterprise to enter its second century with the strength and opportunity we have here at Trustmark.”
In 1913, four enterprising railroad employees decided that “passing the hat” no longer adequately provided financial security for an injured or disabled coworker. They formed a fraternal association, known as the Brotherhood of All Railway Employees, offering insurance benefits to workers. With its current, nationwide focus on serving businesses of all kinds, Trustmark, which is rated A- (Excellent) by A.M. Best Co., took in revenues of more than $936 million in 2012.
The company marks its “100 Years of Trust” year-long centennial with historical displays and vintage costume events, a tree planting ceremony, a new website and history video, expanded social media announcements, and associate essay contests and celebrations.
The Trustmark Companies’ businesses include CoreSource, total value benefits administration; Starmark, health insurance plans for small businesses; Voluntary Benefit Solutions, payroll-deducted voluntary benefits; and HealthFitness, health and fitness center management.
