LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Proving the autumn does not have to mean the start of hibernation season, 750 employees representing 14 companies were cheered on by Chicago Bears mascot Staley during a 5K run or 1.5-mile walk at Conway Park in Lake Forest on Sept. 25. Bears’ defensive tackle Henry Melton was also on hand at the 13th annual Conway Park Autumn Classic to sign “Real Bears Fans Wear Pink” shirts, raising $5,000 for Bears Care, which supports breast cancer patients and their families.
“The annual Autumn Classic promotes health and physical activity while strengthening the bond among Conway Park’s businesses and employees,” said Kelly Tybor, Wellness Manager at Trustmark, which hosted the event. “This year, we had a record number of runners register for the event, which provides the freedom for any Conway Park employee to participate, whether an elite runner or casual walker.”
“In addition to improving our own health through exercise, it’s gratifying to know we helped organizations in the Chicago area that provide care, assistance and support services to breast cancer patients and their families through our fundraising for Bears Care, the charitable arm of the Chicago Bears,” said Tybor. “Employees were also thrilled to meet defensive tackle Henry Melton, who went on to play a great game against the Cowboys a few days later.”
Chicago Bears’ mascot Staley warmed up the crowd with exercises and served as a 5k runner starter. Runners and walkers represented Abbott, Trustmark Companies, HealthFitness, Hospira, Brunswick, Pactiv, Omron, Reynolds, Solo Cup, Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, City of Lake Forest, Tenneco, Chicago Bears and other companies.
Runners from Hospira won the corporate team trophy for the 5K. Medals were also awarded to the top three male runners: Bob LaRue (Hospira) 17:36, David Walsh (Brunswick) 17:39 and Jacob Seidelman (Brunswick) 18:32; and top three female runners: Katherine Weber (Hospira) 20:17, Cory McFadden (Tenneco) 20:33 and Patti Shuma (Trustmark) 22:58.
The Conway Park Autumn Classic event was supported by the Rosalind Franklin University Health System, Reebok, Crossfit Freedom of Libertyville, City of Lake Forest Fitness Center, Conway Park Owners Association and the Conway Park businesses.
