Trustmark Companies Develops Model Wellness Program for Its Lake Forest Employees

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – It wasn’t long ago when employers obtained group health insurance and just crossed their fingers that their employees wouldn’t get sick. Today’s model finds more employers taking the proactive approach of involving employees in their own wellness, with sights on keeping them healthy and preventing illness in the first place.

Trustmark Companies, a health insurer, benefits administrator and lifestyle and fitness management company, is no exception. Trustmark not only supports proactive wellness approaches with its clients, but also with its own employees at its Lake Forest, Ill., headquarters and the surrounding Lake County community at large.

Over the past two years, in particular, Trustmark has expanded its wellness programs to keep its Lake Forest home office employees health-conscious, involved and motivated to achieve positive results. Trustmark’s programs include:

  • Nutritional and fitness webinars and seminars
  • A 5,600 square-foot fitness center staffed by full-time HealthFitness professionals, with more than two-dozen weekly group exercise class options
  • Biometric screenings for BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar levels
  • Annual online health risk assessment (HRA)
  • “Sassy by Summer” weight-loss program
  • “Walk This Way” 10,000 steps-a-day program
  • Summer outdoor “recess” with volleyball, badminton, Frisbee, basketball, walks and relay races during lunch hours
  • Annual health fair with health-related vendors from throughout Lake County
  • Cafeteria with healthy dining choices and nutritional awareness programs
  • Access to health coaches
  • Insurance premium discounts for taking an online HRA and participating in biometric screenings

One of Trustmark’s HealthFitness wellness program clients, Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, Tenn., recently earned a 2011 C. Everett Koop National Health Award. Trustmark’s wellness program helped to reduce Eastman employees’ health risks and lower their medical claims, resulting in a documented 3.2 return on investment for every dollar the company spent on program components.

In addition to employee programs, Trustmark hosts a weekly farmers’ market that serves employees from six different companies in the Lake Forest Conway Park corporate park, where Trustmark is located. “Having the farmer’s market on site makes the purchase of fresh fruit and veggies more convenient for our employees and increases awareness of what it means to eat well,” said MartinĂ©. 

The Trustmark Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Trustmark Companies, in addition to contributing to a number of community-oriented causes, gives annual Impact Educator Grants to Lake County, Ill. Schools. The grants support innovative educational programs that promote healthy lifestyles. Last year, Trustmark issued 84 Impact Educator Grants totaling more than $76,000.
